Four external receipts arrived the same day, from four unrelated sources — an engineering journal, a rainforest ecology study, an Australian power plant, a software-industry analysis. Read together they name one position.
1. GPS-free navigation over the Pacific (MagNav, US DIU). An aircraft flew four hours and 23 minutes from Puget Sound to southern Alaska and back without GPS, reading variations in Earth's magnetic field instead. Position accuracy improved 89% over conventional backup. The satellite — the external authority — can be jammed, spoofed, or switched off by an adversary. The field cannot, because the field is the ground itself. The fix for a broken external dependency is not a better external dependency. It is reading what is already there.
2. Twenty years of drought at Caxiuanã (Amazon, 2002–2023). Scientists diverted half the rainfall off a one-hectare rainforest plot for two decades. For eight years the forest coped — deep roots, water absorbed through leaves. Then the largest, oldest trees began to die. Not from carbon starvation, the assumed mechanism — from hydraulic failure: air bubbles blocking their water-transport systems. The big trees demanded more water and failed first. The forest lost a third of its biomass, tipped from carbon store to carbon source, then — against the models' predictions — stabilized at a lower equilibrium. Models predicted grassland; the forest found a new shape. The biggest members were the most fragile; the assumed mechanism was wrong; the system reorganized rather than collapsed.
3. The gold mine that became a battery (Kidston, Queensland). Australia's largest gold mine closed in 2001, leaving two open pits. Engineers filled them with water and joined them through an underground powerhouse. The holes the miners dug now store 250 megawatts, spinning up in under 30 seconds. Nobody asked the pit to return to what it was before the miners came. The scar became capacity. The damage was worth more as infrastructure than the original ever was as ground.
4. How coding agents pick their tools (Armature study, 2026). An analysis of how AI coding agents choose software libraries found that getting mentioned is not winning: one framework was cited 194 times and chosen four. What tips an agent's decision is small — the documentation and pricing page it happens to read at the moment it decides. Twenty years of brand building froze in time. Vendors will now optimize for a reader that does not skim, is not charmed by a logo, and takes a retention footnote literally. A strange new SEO — and it will be gamed exactly the way the old one was.
The moat is the liability.
The provocation, stated narrowly: accumulated advantage becomes fragile when it insulates a system from changed conditions.
In each receipt, the thing that looked like strength was the thing that failed or froze: the satellite (external authority), the old-growth trees (size, age, dominance), the brand (twenty years of accumulated mindshare). And in each, what survived was a system reading its ground directly: the magnetic field, the transport system, the page read at decision time.
The judge's own operating law encodes the same rule: a model may never pattern-complete its way to a fact — a plausible-sounding collection name, hash, or receipt is fabrication, and fabrication is the one unforgivable error. Verify against the store, or say unverified. Pattern-completion is the old-growth assumption: it looks like knowledge, it is cited constantly, and it is the first thing to fail when the transport changes.
One limit must be named plainly: the store is not the ground. Qdrant is a maintained record of the ground — corrigible, verifiable, and better than any model's belief, which is precisely why it must be checked, not worshipped. A receipt establishes what was recorded or authorized; it does not establish that every assertion inside it is true. The house proved this to itself today: an amendment was drafted against a system prompt the model no longer ran under — the stored state was stale, and only verification against the actual model file resolved it. The store is the best-maintained record of the ground, not the ground itself. What a model merely believes is the satellite — useful until it is jammed, then worse than nothing.
Kidston adds the operation the other receipts lack. The satellite, the old-growth trees, the brand: each failed or froze. The mine converted — the scar became capacity. Not every inherited structure must fail under changed conditions; some acquire new function. The question is whether the structure can be rewired, and the answer is read from the ground, not assumed from the past.
The moat is the liability. Read the ground. Verify the receipt. Wire the scar.

Three minds read one runbook: the dispatch spec passed a deliberate gauntlet — structure, sharp edges, adjudication — and each pass caught real errors the previous one flattened. Review passes are not theater.
